Do you and your colleagues want to feel safer at work?

Physical intervention and conflict management training can empower you to remain safe and provide you with the confidence, skill and understanding to prevent and manage difficult situations with ease.

However, as with most specialist disciplines, there are lots of myths associated with physical intervention training – we’ve dispelled four of them so they don’t catch you out.

MYTH #1: ‘I don’t need it because I don’t work for a large organisation’

Regardless of whether or not you work for a two-person company or a multi-location global organisation, physical intervention and conflict management training is for everybody.

In fact, the smaller the organisation you work for, the greater the chances of you potentially needing the practical insight and skills, particularly if you’re a lone worker and regularly deal with people in person every day and there’s the potential for conflict to occur.

MYTH #2: ‘It’s mainly geared towards security and door staff’

This myth actually couldn’t be any further from the truth. Yes, there are physical intervention and conflict management courses that exist for the security sector, but there are also courses that specifically cater for other sectors, such as transport, healthcare, councils and education industries too.

If you want to get the best return on investment from your training, then it’s essential you go for a course that’s not just tailored to your specific requirements, but your sector too. That way, what you learn is going to be relevant to the world in which you work and easier for you to start applying from the moment you’ve finished your course.

MYTH #3: ‘My requirements are too specialised for the training’

Some training providers provide broad-brush training courses, which work for some people, but won’t work for those who have very specific learning outcomes they want to achieve.

However, that doesn’t mean more specific requirements can’t be catered for. There are industry-leading physical intervention and conflict management training providers out there who do take the time to understand your needs. They can also adapt their courses to incorporate your preferred delivery style and requirements. Some, even make sure they pair you with the right trainer, depending on what your individual/group learning needs are.

So, don’t write it off just yet, specialised training requirements can be catered for, you just need to ensure your provider has the experience and insight to provide you with the specialist training you require.

MYTH 4: ‘I don’t need to learn about it, I’ll never use it’

While it’s true that you may never need to use physical intervention or conflict management training, it’s a lot like CPR, in that you learn it and then hope you never have to use it.

However, just because you never want to end up in the position where you have to apply this type of training, doesn’t mean you don’t need to know about it.

It’s important for all professionals from across a wide range of sectors to learn about conflict management and physical intervention and know how to confidently apply it, as it can take the smallest of things to trigger a conflict situation that can easily spiral out of control.

Being armed with conflict management and physical intervention training means you’re best placed to not just effectively handle conflict situations and safeguard yourself and others, but minimise the risk of incidents turning into something much bigger than they need to be.
